  • Bidding Farewell to an Ilala Legend

Bidding Farewell to an Ilala Legend

The end of 2024 marked the closing of an incredible chapter for Ilala Lodge Hotel as we bid farewell to Peter Msindo, a beloved member of our hotel family, who retired after 33-years of service.

Peter’s story is so closely intertwined with the very essence of Ilala Lodge Hotel that it is almost impossible to imagine our every day without him. On 1 March 1991, as we opened our doors for the very first time, Peter was there, stepping through them as our front porter and beginning what would evolve into a long and fruitful career. Over the years, he became a living testament to dedication, growth, and exceptional service – qualities that have defined his time with us and left an indelible mark on Ilala Lodge Hotel.

Peter’s unwavering commitment and natural leadership abilities allowed him to rise through the ranks with grace. In 1999, he was promoted to Head Porter, and not long after, he transitioned to our front desk team.

For nearly 25 years, Peter greeted countless guests with the warm, welcoming smile that became his signature and the hallmark of Ilala Lodge’s hospitality. Whether it was offering directions, sharing local insights, or simply making a guest feel truly at home, his genuine kindness made all who entered our doors feel like part of the Ilala family.

Born and raised in Mhondoro, near St Theresa Nyanda School in Zimbabwe, Peter has always maintained a deep sense of humility and family. His unwavering dedication to Ilala Lodge never took away from his role as a loving husband, father to four children, and proud grandfather to five grandchildren. His family values have always shone through, not only in how he cared for his own but also in the way he treated every guest and colleague as part of his extended family. His approach to hospitality was not just professional, it was personal – built on the same love, respect, and care that he showed those closest to him.

As Peter embarks on this new chapter of his life, we celebrate not just a colleague, but a true cornerstone of Ilala Lodge’s legacy. His exceptional service and heartfelt hospitality have shaped the heart and soul of our hotel. However, his impact will continue to resonate in the way we serve our guests and welcome visitors to Victoria Falls.

Peter, thank you for your 33 years of dedication, hard work, and unwavering positivity. You have touched the lives of countless people and made Ilala Lodge Hotel feel like a second home to all of us. We wish you a retirement filled with well-deserved joy, relaxation, and precious moments with your family.

You will always have a special place in the heart of your Ilala Lodge family, and we will carry your legacy of warmth and generosity forward with us.

Farewell, Peter. We miss you already!

  • Top 5 Cliff Path Viewpoints

    Top 5 Cliff Path Viewpoints

On the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls, we’re fortunate to boast 16 of the 19 Cliff Path Viewpoints. Below we’ll explore a few of our favourites – idyllic no matter the season.

    Our Proximity To The Falls

Guests of Ilala Lodge Hotel are delighted to learn just how close we are to Victoria Falls National Park – a 5-minute amble from our gate to the entrance. (Or a 30-second sprint, depending on how eager you are!)

The beauty of our proximity to the Falls means that, on quiet nights, you can hear the rumble of the Smoke That Thunders from your bed and imagine the might with which the Zambezi River tumbles over the gorge’s edge and crashes into the ravine below, both shaping and being led by the landscape’s course until it eventually empties out in the Indian Ocean on Mozambique’s coast.

We’re incredibly proud to border one of the World’s Natural Wonders, and encourage all guests to put aside at least the better part of a day to stroll along Victoria Falls’ Cliff Path.

While every viewpoint offers something to marvel at, we’ve decided to compile a list of the 5 that we think are worth a little extra time.

The link to the map we’re referring to can be found here. Feel free to download it in preparation for your visit!

    The David Livingstone Statue

    Viewpoint 1

After you enter Victoria Falls National Park and pass the information center, curio shops and The Rainforest Café (to be circled back to after your explorations for a refreshing cold drink and something to eat) you will follow a paved walkway toward the Falls and the start of the Cliff Path.

Before approaching the gorge’s edge you will see a statue of David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer who first laid eyes on the Falls on 16 November 1855 and is credited with introducing it to the Western World.

The statue faces east toward the Main Falls, and we encourage you to read the various placards about Livingstone to gain some insight into those times.

While Zimbabwe’s history with colonialism is checkered and complicated, Livingstone remains an important figure in our history. There is no mention of this waterfall – named after England’s Queen Empress at the time – without some reference to his prolific exploits.

    The Chain Walk

    Viewpoint 2

The very next viewpoint after the statue of David Livingstone is called The Chain Walk, a steep flight of 73 stairs that will take you below the clifftop and have you feeling like you’re descending into a roaring chasm of thunderous water.

You should descend these stairs very carefully and it’s not recommended for those whose knees are not nimble, but, once at the bottom, you will be treated to a magnificent view of the beginning of the gorge.

Visibility will vary depending on the river’s water levels, but you’ll either be able to see down the gorge towards the Main Falls (when levels are low) and enjoy the gorge’s impressive structure, or be swallowed in a misty shroud that is equally exciting to experience.

    Main Falls

    Viewpoint 8

Viewpoint 8 offers the most ‘head on’ view of the Main Falls – 150 metres wide and 93 metres deep where the water plunges into the gorge. The viewpoint itself is a small area and is surrounded by trees, making you feel as though you’ve emerged from the forest into a different world.

Adding to this feeling, the Main Falls usually produces rainbows in the afternoon, when the sun reflects off of the water droplets from the spray at just the right angle to create a dazzle of colours.

Here’s a fun fact for you: There is a portion of Victoria Falls National Park’s rainforest (which you’ll walk through when following the Cliff Path) that receives ‘rain’ 24 hours a day, 365 days a year thanks to the waterfall’s spray. It’s said that this is one of the only places in the world where this is the case.

    Victoria Falls Slider Main Falls

    Livingstone Island

    Viewpoint 12 (Spray Ahoy!)

Speaking of water spray, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll walk the length of Victoria Falls National Park’s Cliff Path and not get wet.

We encourage you not to shrink away from this prospect, but to enjoy it! Aside from protecting your electricals, if you visit during summer, you might even like to forego the rain poncho and delight in getting drenched by the water.

One of the best places to do this is Viewpoint 12 – a notoriously spray-heavy spot that also offers you a wonderful view of David Livingstone Island and Horse Shoe Falls. (When visibility allows.)

    Victoria Falls Bridge

    Viewpoint 16

From the final viewpoint on the Zimbabwean side of the Falls you can see Victoria Falls Bridge, completed in 1905 and built as part of the Cape to Cairo Railway.

At 111m above (low) water level and spanning 198m in length, it literally “bridges” the gap between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The bridge is a true marvel of engineering, especially when you consider that its parts weren’t even constructed on-site. Its components were made in England, shipped to Mozambique and then transported to Victoria Falls by rail.

Today, at this viewpoint, you can see bungee jumpers, gorge swingers and bridge sliders taking a brave leap from the bridge’s heights. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to get your own adrenaline pumping!

  • Victoria Falls: Rainy Season vs. Dry Season

Victoria Falls: Rainy Season vs. Dry Season

When deciding on the best time to visit Victoria Falls, bear in mind our two overarching seasons – rainy season and dry season. Here is everything you need to know about the weather before booking your holiday to Ilala Lodge Hotel!

The beautiful town of Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but your experience and activity list can vary greatly depending on when you visit. To help you decide on the best time to visit Victoria Falls – according to your and your family’s needs and preferences – let’s compare our two chief seasons!

Here in Victoria Falls, spring, summer, autumn and winter are merely pitstops under the banner of our true yearly markers: Rainy season and dry season. Each season offers its own unique set of charms and challenges – let’s walk through them together.

The Dry Season: May to October

    Comfortable Weather

The dry season, spanning from May to October, covers the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn, winter, and early spring. During this period, temperatures are moderate and extremely comfortable, with temperatures rarely dropping below 13°C (55°F). This is with the exception of October, when things really start to heat up. Our winters might be a world away from those chilly white-outs you experience in the Northern Hemisphere, but don’t be fooled – you’ll still need to pack some warm clothes in your suitcase.

    Best Bush (And Falls) Visibility

The dry weather means the bush surrounding Victoria Falls is less dense, making this the ideal time of year for planning a safari to one of the national parks near Vic Falls. Animals gather around the shrinking water sources, making them easier to spot.

(There are plenty of fabulous day trip options – simply ask our Tours Desk to help you.)

The clear skies also ensure that you have an unobstructed view of the majestic Falls when you walk along the Cliff Path, or dine on the award-winning Cassia Restaurant’s terrace.

    Ideal For Adventure

Whether you’re planning a thrilling white-water rafting trip or a scenic helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, the dry season offers stable weather conditions that are ideal for outdoor activities.

    Larger Crowds

Because the dry season is the most popular time to visit Victoria Falls, you might encounter more tourists, especially during peak months. It’s wise to book your accommodations and activities well in advance to get the best rates.

The Green Season: November to April

    Lush Scenery

The Green Season, beginning with the first rains in November, transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of green. This season is aptly named for its rich, lush vegetation that creates a stunning contrast to the dry season’s more arid environment.

(Note: The Victoria Falls rainforest is always green thanks to the constant spray it experiences from the water pushed out of the Falls’ chasm. It’s well worth looking ‘touristy’ and wearing that rain poncho, especially if you have electronics on you. Otherwise, make like some and revel in getting soaked to the skin! There’s something magical about being doused in water from The Smoke That Thunders…)

    A Birding Bonanza

Migrant birds arrive with the rains, making the rainy season an excellent time for birdwatching enthusiasts. The bush becomes a haven for bird species, and the improved birding conditions are a significant draw for many visitors.

    Less Crowded

With fewer tourists visiting the Falls during this season, you can enjoy a more tranquil experience at Victoria Falls. This is ideal for those who prefer a quieter escape.

    Hot & Humid Weather

November to February can be extremely hot, with temperatures soaring up to 40°C (104°F). As the dad joke goes: ‘It’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the humidity!’ While some cope well with suana-like conditions, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The hot weather does make for excellent swimming opportunities though, and we’ve got a sparkling blue pool with your name on it.

    Variable Water Levels

While the rains bring vibrant changes, they also lead to variable river levels. Deep rains in January and February can lead to flooding, which means the Zambezi River might be at its fullest by March and April, affecting the visibility and volume of the falls.

Note: For more information on the water volume of the Falls, click here. River water volume does not necessarily correlate with the wet and dry seasons because the rains from the Falls’ source on the Angolan border still need to travel many kilometres before they reach us!

    A Final Word

So, when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

It truly depends on what you’re seeking in your adventure. If you’re after comfortable weather and easy wildlife spotting, the dry season is perfect for you. However, if you’re excited by lush landscapes, birdwatching, a more serene atmosphere and plenty of pool time, the Green Season offers a unique and rewarding experience.

No matter when you choose to visit, Victoria Falls promises an unforgettable adventure with its breathtaking views and diverse experiences. Plan accordingly, and you’re sure to have a memorable stay with us at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

  • The Conscientious Traveller’s Guide To Victoria Falls

The Conscientious Traveller’s Guide To Victoria Falls

Experiencing new cultures is one of life’s great joys! Let’s explore responsible ways to enjoy Victoria Falls so that you can get the most out of your trip.

What does it mean to be a conscientious traveller in today’s terms? We are fortunate to live in a time when travelling from one side of the globe to the other is relatively easy, all things considered, but with this incredible privilege comes equal responsibility.

In our books, being a conscientious traveller comes down to one fundamental principle: Consideration. Consider the place you are visiting as a whole. Victoria Falls is more than a tourist destination; it is also a home to many, an environment deserving of protection and a socio-economic structure with its own rules and rhythms. A conscientious visitor’s place is to learn, participate and enjoy the many gifts of travel in Victoria Falls, while employing a few considerate habits.

Let’s explore where and when they will apply together!

Victoria Falls Guide: Getting Around Town

Ilala Lodge Hotel is nestled right in the heart of Victoria Falls, a stone’s throw away from Victoria Falls National Park and all the other exciting attractions of town.

While our grounds are private and secluded, vibrant shops and eateries await you just outside the gates. Vic Falls locals are incredibly proud of our beautiful town, and you will discover this during your explorations. It’s perfectly safe to walk around town, with warm smiles and greetings awaiting you everywhere you go.

When visiting one of the many stores or markets nearby, being a conscientious traveller means respecting local customs and practices. While haggling might be common in the open air or craft markets, it is not always appropriate in the more formal store set-ups where prices are fixed. Cash remains king in Victoria Falls, with the U.S. dollar being the preferred currency for transactions. Ensure you carry small denominations, as change might be limited. Adhering to these guidelines helps foster positive interactions and supports the local economy.

Where safety is concerned, Victoria Falls takes pride in its status as a tourism destination and is invested in keeping its reputation as a safe, friendly town intact. As with all places, you should take care of your personal belongings, but you shouldn’t be afraid to tackle the town on foot. In fact, it’s encouraged! Inside Victoria Falls National Park itself, there are additional tourism safety guards stationed for your peace of mind. (And to ensure appropriate behaviour inside the park – like not walking too close to the edge of the gorge.)

    Ethical Wildlife Encounters

Apart from the mighty Falls, Victoria Falls is a hub for day trips to the surrounding wildlife areas. In many of the parks, both in Zimbabwe and nearby Zambia, you will have the incredible opportunity to see many large African mammals like lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, wild dogs and more!

We do, however, like to draw our visitors’ attention to the difference between a well-run game reserve and exploitative animal encounters that put profit above the well-being of wild animals.

When in doubt as to whether a wildlife experience is ethical or not, consider these two rules of thumb:

    1. Sometimes, the pricey experience is preferable to the money-saver. Why? You get what you pay for, and this applies to the quality of your game driver and tracker and the principles they adhere to in the park to keep you and the animals safe.

    2. Avoid experiences that allow exploitative touching of a wild animal – the animal must always have a choice! Overall we’d encourage you to avoid any personal encounters with wild animals, but there are rare exceptions where the experience is well-run and to the benefit of the species’ rehabilitation. Do your research and make use of reputable operators.

Travel Tip: Our Ra-Ikane River Cruises are a wonderful way to take in the wildlife along the banks of the Zambezi River in a safe and stunning setting that respects both the environment and the animals.

    What About Us?

Now that we’ve given you a few pointers on exploring Victoria Falls in an ethical way, it’s only fair that we put our cards on the table, too.

Here at Ilala Lodge Hotel, we care deeply about our context, our town and our community.

  • Exploring the Rich Fauna & Flora of Victoria Falls

Exploring the Rich Fauna & Flora of Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, one of the world’s seven natural wonders, is more than its awe-inspiring cascades. Nestled in the heart of Zimbabwe, this UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts a diverse array of fauna and flora – delighting visitors who come for the falls, but end up enjoying far more than they originally bargained for!

    Green Canopies & Colorful Blooms

As you approach Victoria Falls via the tarred walkway leading away from the park’s main gate, you’ll find yourself immersed in a lush environment teeming with plantlife.

The rainforest, as it’s become known, lines the gorge of the falls; a unique microclimate characterised by high humidity and constant mist from the cascading waters. This environment nurtures a dense canopy of trees, including mahogany, ebony, and fig trees, which tower over a rich understory of ferns, creepers, and even the forest-dwelling orchid (calanthe sylvatica), a beautiful plant that flowers in December.

    Victoria Falls Slider Rainforest

The Victoria Falls rainforest is renowned for its plant diversity, hosting over 70 shrub species and 170 floral species. (And that’s excluding the trees!) One notable resident is the vegetable ivory palm, or, as we prefer to call it, the ilala palm. This tree, after which our hotel is named, is known for its hard, ivory-like seeds that have been used for centuries in crafting jewellery and ornaments.

(Read all about our special history with the ilala palm here.)

    A Haven For Wildlife

Beyond its botanical wonders, Victoria Falls is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The Zambezi River, which feeds the falls, supports a thriving ecosystem that attracts a variety of animals throughout the year. One of the most iconic inhabitants is the African elephant.

If you’ve visited Victoria Falls, you might even have seen ellies roaming the streets in town, though they do prefer to avoid human settlements where possible. Other mammals you could see in Victoria Falls National Park are warthogs, vervet monkeys, baboons, mongooses and, if you’re lucky, the elusive bushbuck!

Our hotel’s gardens, which border the park, have also been known to attract zebras and warthogs, who delight guests as they dine on the veranda of the Cassia Restaurant.

Bird-watchers will also be delighted by the many species of birds that call Victoria Falls home. From majestic African fish eagles and fork-tailed drongos to colourful malachite kingfishers darting above the water, the birdlife here is a testament to the area’s ecological richness.

    Eco-Tourism At Its Best

For eco-conscious travellers, Victoria Falls offers a perfect blend of adventure and environmental education. Guided tours not only showcase the splendour of the falls, but also highlight the importance of conservation.

    victoria falls activities

Walking tours through the rainforest provide an up-close look at the diverse plant life, while boat cruises on the Zambezi River offer opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, and the myriad of bird species in their natural habitat.

Overall, a trip to Victoria Falls isn’t just about witnessing a geological wonder; it’s about immersing yourself in a world where nature reigns supreme and doing your part to ensure conservation triumphs with effort.

    Stay With Us

Ilala Lodge Hotel is a 5-star establishment located in the heart of Victoria Falls town, right on the border of the national park and within walking distance of the falls.

  • Exploring The Victoria Falls Craft Markets

Exploring The Victoria Falls Craft Markets

If you’re looking for things to do in Victoria Falls, our town’s open-air craft markets are a wonderful place to start. With wares that reflect an eclectic mix of cultures across Zimbabwe and the wider African continent, you’re certain to find something unique and beautiful to remind you of your magical holiday.

Winding your way between the stalls of Victoria Falls’ craft markets is not a high street shopping experience, but if you’re open to trying your hand at bartering and expending a bit of leg work to get around, there are treasures to be found! (And hopefully a few bargains, too.)

    What Can I Buy?

Outdoor markets have a long and storied history in African culture. They are places of coming together, sharing news and trading goods that range from fresh foodstuffs to beautifully crafted household items.

As Victoria Falls receives many tourists each year, the town’s markets have evolved to cater to holiday-makers, but this has in no way diminished the true artistry at play. In fact, some of the artists in Victoria Falls have achieved international acclaim, enabling them to charge large sums of money for their work.

Items on sale include a wide range of artisanal crafts, such as stone carvings made from soapstone, serpentine, red jasper, malachite, and verdite. Among these are Ukama sculptures, various wood carvings from local hardwoods, and both small and large wooden sculptures, including walking sticks. The selection also features beaded jewellery, including headwear, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Additionally, there are mixed medium sculptures crafted from repurposed materials, paintings, traditional fabrics, household items and clothing.

Elephant’s Walk Shopping Centre and Artist Village

A great place to start your shopping journey is at Elephant’s Walk, a well-established centre that boasts some of the best speciality shops and studios in town.

Here you can meet local artists and craftsmen at work, including a silversmith who still uses the method of wax casting to make his pieces. You’ll also find a taxidermist here and The Happy Hippo Organic Garden that provides the perfect opportunity to learn about traditional herbal healing.

Grab an energising cup of Zimbabwean coffee at The Africa Café before stopping by the Jafuta Heritage Centre to learn more about this region’s history and many cultures. Jafuta’s curator is called Ephraim and is known in the area as a Nyanga (fortune-teller).

Note: This market has a formal setup and isn’t open to haggling. Some shops have card facilities, but cash is still king. (US dollars, Rands and Pula are generally accepted all over.)

    A Famous Face

Meet Dexter (50), a renowned artist in Victoria Falls. Dexter was born in Bulawayo and worked as a tree-cutter in his younger years. He is a self-taught artist, selling his first sculpture for $95 in 1994 and then $10 000 in 2014! He bought his first car with this money. Dexter loves life and living in the Falls. When asked what he’s learnt in his life so far he says: “That this world really is a beautiful place!”

    Outdoor Markets

As you explore Victoria Falls on foot, you’ll notice there are many street sellers, some of whom conglomerate together to form large outdoor markets. Some stalls are housed together in sprawling buildings, while others consist of nothing more than beautiful wares displayed on woven mats neatly arranged on the ground.

These open-air markets pop up organically around town – some named, some not – as intrinsic to the lifeblood of this economy as the Falls themselves. It’s here where you’re most likely to find true gems and bargains. However, as an artist’s renown rises, so too do their prices and it’s always best to respect this.

Haggling is expected in the outdoor markets, but there are a few terms of courtesy you should adhere to.

    Tips on Bartering

    • Shop around first. It’s best to get a general idea of everything that’s available to you before making a purchase. Don’t simply buy the first thing you see; get a lay of the land and then make your decision.
    • When talking about price, don’t always try to haggle down. Carefully inspect the material used and consider the time taken to create such a beautiful object. If it still seems a little steep, suggest two-thirds of the price they set and begin there. If you don’t have any luck, politely decline and move on.
    • Sometimes, when you buy many items from the same vendor, they will give you a discount on the bulk purchase.
    • Remember you are paying for craftsmanship, but you also want to ensure that the item you’re buying is of good quality. Look out for the types of wood used in sculptures. Valuable hardwoods are very heavy and have grains that grow close together.
    • Show respect to all vendors, but be firm in setting your boundaries.
    • Establishing relationships and talking to shop owners helps you gain a better understanding of the work on offer.

  • 5 Cocktails To Try At Our Poolside Bar

5 Cocktails To Try At Our Poolside Bar

Whether you’re a discerning traveller or an incurable explorer, there is a cocktail to suit every personality. Relax at our cosy Poolside Bar and order something to your taste as you watch the sun set over Victoria Falls.

Ilala Lodge Hotel’s Poolside Bar is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing in Victoria Falls. (Especially if you’ve participated in any high-wire activities like bungee jumping and need a soothing beverage to calm your nerves…)

Located between our two swimming pools, the Poolside Bar’s finishings are made from locally-sourced, Zimbabwean teak railway sleepers, a unique feature of our historic hotel, lending warmth and comfort to the bar’s interior.

Looking out, you will be greeted by a view of our sprawling lawns that run flush with the border of Victoria Falls National Park. This means that your favourite sundowner cocktail can be enjoyed while gazing at the spray rising up from Victoria Falls, only a few kilometres away. On quiet nights, you can even hear the water’s mighty crash!

Depending on your mood or the occasion, here is our recommendation of five cocktails you simply must try at our Poolside Bar!

    Margarita – A Classic

Components: Tequila, Cointreau & Lime Juice

Sip on this sophisticated classic as you gaze out at the beauty of our grounds.

Families of warthogs and impalas are known to graze on our lawns in the late afternoon and early evening. Could there be anything more luxurious than sipping on a Margarita as you enjoy this beautiful sight?

The Margarita is one of the world’s most popular cocktails and modern renditions often see it served frozen as a type of ‘slushy’. Come and try Ilala Lodge Hotel’s classic rendition in Victoria Falls!

Rock Shandy – A Local Favourite

Components: Lemonade, Soda Water & Bitters

There is nothing more refreshing than a Rock Shandy after a long day of exploring Victoria Falls on foot.

Rock shandies are neither sweet, nor bitter. It’s the fragrant flavour, thanks to the bitters, that makes this the perfect drink for any occasion, especially if you’re looking to avoid alcohol.

While bitters does contain alcohol, the spirit is used in such small quantities (a few drops) that most soda-based drinks containing bitters are considered non-alcoholic. (Think of it like adding vanilla essence to your cake mixture!)

Zambezi Blue Haze – A Pop Of Colour

Components: Vodka, Blue Curacao & Lemonade

This colourful treat is our hotel’s Signature Cocktail!

Your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel isn’t complete without sampling the Zambezi Blue Haze – a flamboyant ode to our surroundings and the vibrance of life beside the Zambezi River.

Sample this one at your own risk, but do sample it. The Haze is best enjoyed at sundown from the comfort of a lounger beside the pool.

Strawberry Mojito – A Fruity Sensation

Components: Bacardi, Mint, Strawberry & Soda Water

A fruity twist on a tried and true classic, the Strawberry Mojito is perfect for sunny afternoons on the pool deck.

Did you know that mojitos originate in Havana, Cuba? The original mix was used as medicine!

As we know, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Or, in this case, a few strawberries…

    Don Pedro – After Dinner

Components: Amarula, Kahlua or Whisky with Vanilla Ice-Cream

Combine dessert with your after-dinner drink when you order a Don Pedro – a classic South African dessert cocktail.

Don Pedros combine your choice of Kahlua liqueur, Amarula liqueur or whiskey with vanilla ice-cream – like a milkshake for adults!

The luxurious flavours of this cocktail make it a decadent treat.

The Poolside Bar is open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM.

  • The Perfect Verandah

    The Perfect Verandah

The perfect verandah seamlessly integrates the indoors with the outdoors. It is a place of transition and relaxation, where slow days can be spent taking in the beauty of your surroundings from the comfort of a beautifully designed space.

    A Brief History

The earliest examples of verandahs can be found in an ancient Indian text known as the Vastu Shastra, which means ‘science of architecture’ in Hindi. There are many texts of a similar nature that also originate from this era – between 2 BCE and 6 AD – which speak to the principles of design when it comes to hormonising the indoors with the outdoors.

It is believed that outdoor verandahs, as we know them today, were brought to Britain from India during the colonial era and then spread to parts of the former British Empire by settlers. For this reason, we commonly associate verandahs with colonial architecture, particularly in hot or sub-tropical regions like Durban in South Africa, Queensland in Australia or Victoria Falls, right here in Zimbabwe.

    Beauty & Function

Verandahs are roofed, open-air hallways attached to the side of a domestic building. There are many variations, but a typical outdoor verandah is found on the ground floor and may take up one side of a building, or wrap around it entirely.

The verandah’s original function was to create a cool, sheltered space for members of the home to escape the heat; an in-between space, if you like, where you aren’t cooped up inside, but aren’t entirely exposed to the elements either. You will rarely find this architectural feature in cold countries, but in places like Victoria Falls, where days can get balmy, verandahs make perfect sense!

In time, outdoor verandahs became more than a practical feature of the home: They became showpieces of architectural design. Where better to enjoy your house’s beautiful aspects and surroundings than the verandah? Where better to entertain your guests and show off the beauty of your garden? In many ways, a verandah is as much a feature of landscaping as it is a feature of interior design.

    Our Outdoor Verandahs

Ilala Lodge Hotel borders on Victoria Falls National Park – a unique and beautiful placement we are compelled to take advantage of. Therefore, in true ‘functionality means beauty’ form, we have incorporated multiple verandahs into the design of our hotel, so that guests may feel connected to the outdoors throughout their stay.

Our award-winning Cassia Restaurant is a fabulous example, where guests can spill out onto the lawned terrace from the verandah looking out over our grounds. From here, you’ll even be able to see ‘smoke’ rising up from the mighty Falls themselves.

Our outdoor verandah is the perfect place to sip on your first cup of coffee of the day, take in the world as it comes to life, or enjoy a dinner al fresco under the starry African sky. The verandah is also flanked by our famous ‘golden shower’ (Cassia fistula) trees – which draw admirers from near and far.

    Stay With Us

Join us and enjoy our various outdoor spaces during your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel, where the beauty of nature reigns supreme.

Nowhere is this beauty better enjoyed than from our masterfully designed verandahs – and ode to the past and place from which to sink into the present.
