6 Things Most People Get Wrong About Victoria Falls

Once a myth takes route, it can be difficult to shake!

Before you visit Victoria Falls, you’ll probably do a little research, and most of what you find will be accurate. But, with that said, a handful of ideas about this place have been repeated so often that they’ve taken on the authority of fact, even when they aren’t quite right…

Here are six of the most common misconceptions – and the Victoria Falls facts that sit behind them. Hopefully we’ll answer a few extra questions you might have about our beautiful town along the way.

    1. It’s Too Remote to Reach Easily

It’s true that the African continent – and even Zimbabwe itself – has many wild frontiers, but Victoria Falls town is entirely accessible. With its own international airport, less than 20 minutes from the town centre (and from Ilala Lodge Hotel), getting to us is a piece of cake.

Direct or single connection flights link our airport to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Lusaka and Harare, among other hubs.

After you land, Ilala Lodge Hotel offers hotel transfers to collect you directly from the airport and bring you directly to us. Our shuttles can also take you anywhere you might like to go in town during your stay, including our beautiful sister property, Palm River Hotel.

Victoria Falls is compact and safe, making it relatively walkable, too, depending on where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do.

All of this to say: We may be on the fringe of some spectacular and wild scenery, but we are not so remote as to make your travels a mission.

    2. You Should Only Visit in Peak Season

This is one of those Victoria Falls facts worth sitting with: there is no bad time to visit. There is only a different experience depending on when you come.

The dry months from May to October bring clear skies, lower water levels in the gorge, and excellent game viewing as wildlife gathers around the Zambezi. The wetter months from November to April transform the Falls themselves and the volume of water increases dramatically, with spray visible from kilometres away.

Visit around the full moon between March and June and you may even witness a moonbow! (A rainbow formed by moonlight, not sunlight, passing through the Falls’ mist.) It is one of the quieter Victoria Falls facts, and one of the most extraordinary things you can see here.

The question isn’t about peak season or off season; it’s what you’d like to see when you join us.

To help you make up your mind, check out this blog post: The Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls

    3. David Livingstone Discovered the Falls

Arriving on 16 November 1855, David Livingstone was the first European to describe Victoria Falls, naming it after the United Kingdom’s then-monarch, Queen Victoria. This is true enough, but the word “discover” is misleading.

In fact, the Kalolo-Lozi people knew these falls for generations before Livingstone arrived. They called them Mosi-oa-Tunya – the Smoke That Thunders – a name that has endured alongside the colonial one and is still widely used today. The falls Livingstone ‘discovered’ had a name, a history, and a people who had lived alongside them long before his canoes rounded that last bend in the Zambezi.

    4. Victoria Falls Is the Tallest Waterfall in the World

It isn’t. Angel Falls in Venezuela holds that record, at 979 metres. Victoria Falls drops approximately 108 metres; impressive by any measure, but not the tallest.

What Victoria Falls does hold is an arguably more striking title: it is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. At peak flow, the Zambezi stretches approximately 1 708 metres across the Falls, and the combined width and height create a curtain of water that no other waterfall can match.

    Tallest? No. Largest? Yes.

    5. Victoria Falls Is Only for Adrenaline Seekers

Victoria Falls town may be known as the Adventure Capital of Africa, but don’t be too quick to peg it as a one trick pony. Yes, there is bungee jumping, white-water rafting, gorge swinging, zip lining and numerous other thrilling activities, but they are one layer of what Victoria Falls offers.

For travellers seeking something more settled, cultural or relaxing, there is also the rainforest walk along the Cliff Path, where the sound of the crashing water fills the air and spray from the water drenches you all the way through. There are game drives into Zambezi National Park, where elephants and buffalo move through the bush. There are sunset cruises on the upper Zambezi, where the light changes slowly and the pace drops entirely. There are also restaurants, cultural experiences, markets and, of course, long afternoons beside our hotel’s pool – whatever your heart desires.

Victoria Falls is a place where people with very different ideas of a good day can all find what they’re looking for. The adventure activities draw the headlines, but they don’t define the whole experience.

    6. You Need to Cross Into Zambia for the Best View

This one depends heavily on the time of year and what you mean by ‘best.’

During the high-water months, the Zambian side offers views into areas that may be obscured by spray on the Zimbabwean side. But for much of the year, and particularly during the drier months, the Zimbabwean viewpoints along the Cliff Path provide a broader, more varied perspective, including the famous Main Falls, the Devil’s Cataract and the Eastern Cataract.

A full appreciation of the Falls benefits from both sides, if you have the time, and luckily, crossing the border into Zambia is a quick and painless process. But for those staying in Victoria Falls town, the Zimbabwean viewpoints are not a compromise.

  • How Victoria Falls Became the Adrenaline Capital of Africa

How Victoria Falls Became the Adrenaline Capital of Africa

There are few places in Africa where you can wake up to the sound of a waterfall, walk to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World before breakfast, and spend the afternoon bungee jumping into a gorge, if that’s your thing. Did we say a few places? We meant to say one.

Victoria Falls has somehow managed to become one of the world’s great adventure destinations while remaining, at heart, a small Zimbabwean town, and we think that this combination is part of the magic.
The cliffs, the river, the rainforest and the bridge have created an almost perfect playground for Victoria Falls adventure activities. But the story of how that happened begins long before bungee cords, helicopters and white-water rafts arrived.

    It begins with a bridge…

    Traversing Batoka Gorge

Looking down into the Batoka Gorge, it’s easy to understand why adventure took root here.

The Zambezi River has carved a dramatic passage through the basalt below the falls, creating sheer walls, narrow channels and a succession of pulse-spiking rapids. From the Cliff Path above, it looks almost impossible to reach. At river level, it is a completely different world: Rock, spray, current and an enormous amount of moving water.

At the Victoria Falls drop, the Zambezi is approximately 1,7km wide, depending on the time of year. Batoka Gorge is between 50m and 150m wide. The water is squeezed through the gorge, with more than 20 named rapids making this stretch of river famous among white-water paddlers.

In other words, we owe our legendary rapids to nothing less than geography and time – Mother Nature’s best trick!

    The Bridge That Changed Everything

The next ingredient in our story is the Victoria Falls Bridge, which was completed and opened in 1905.

The bridge was conceived as part of Cecil Rhodes’s grand vision for a railway linking Cape Town to Cairo. Rhodes famously wanted the railway bridge positioned so that passing trains would catch the spray of the Falls. It so happened that he died before construction began and never saw the Victoria Falls Bridge for himself.

The finished bridge was built in sections in England, shipped to Mozambique and transported north by rail. When it opened on 12 September 1905, it stood 128m above the Zambezi and brought something the falls had never had in quite the same way before: tourists.

Before the railway, reaching Victoria Falls meant a long and difficult journey for explorers, missionaries and the particularly determined traveller. Afterwards, the Falls could be reached as part of a much more conventional journey. Hotels followed and the town grew.

More than a century later, that relationship between the railway, the bridge, the Falls and tourism still largely defines Victoria Falls.

At Ilala Lodge Hotel, that history is woven into the property itself. The teak furnishings in the rooms are made from Zimbabwean railway sleepers, a small reminder of the infrastructure that first connected Victoria Falls to the wider world.

Then Someone Looked at the Bridge and Thought: Let’s Jump Off It

For decades, the bridge was primarily what it had been designed to be: A remarkable feat of engineering and a way across the Zambezi.

Then, in the 1990s, someone saw something else.

In 1994, bungee operations began at the Victoria Falls Bridge, turning one of the most famous pieces of infrastructure in southern Africa into an adventure attraction in its own right.

The jump was simple in concept and spectacular in execution: Step from the bridge and free-fall towards the Zambezi. It didn’t take long for word to spread. Victoria Falls already had one of the world’s great natural spectacles. Now it had something else that adventure travellers were looking for: A place where the landscape wasn’t just something to look at; it was something to launch yourself into.

    And The River Followed

Bungee jumping was only the beginning.

The Zambezi had long attracted experienced paddlers, but commercial rafting opened the river to a much wider audience. The rapids below Victoria Falls became one of the world’s best-known white-water adventures, combining demanding Grade 5 rapids with the extraordinary setting of the Batoka Gorge.

Then came the helicopters. The famous Flight of Angels offers a completely different perspective, lifting above the river and tracing the Falls from the air. From that height, the sheer scale of the landscape becomes clear: The rainforest, the Zambezi, the gorge and the curtain of spray that is often the first thing you notice from afar on land.

After that, the possibilities seemed almost endless: Gorge swings, zip lines, abseiling, bridge slides and microlight flights. Each activity uses the same relatively small piece of landscape, but offers visitors something completely different!

This is one of the great things about Victoria Falls – you don’t have to travel for hours between attractions. The bridge, river, gorge, Falls and national parks are all packed into the same extraordinary corner of Zimbabwe.

What Can You Actually Do in Victoria Falls?

Today, the list of things to do in Victoria Falls is surprisingly long for such a compact destination:

    • You can start above the Falls, with a helicopter or microlight flight, and see the Zambezi spread out across the landscape before it disappears into the gorge. You can head to the Victoria Falls Bridge for a bungee jump, gorge swing, bridge slide or abseil.
    • Or you can go down to the river itself. A full-day Zambezi rafting trip takes you through the gorge and its famous rapids, turning the river into the main event.

And then there are the adventures for those who’d like to take it easier:

    • A cruise on the upper Zambezi is a beautiful and intimate way to take in the river. We recommend using our sister hotel’s Ra-Ikane River Cruisers for this activity.
    • A game drive into Zambezi National Park can bring you close to elephants, buffalo, giraffes and, with luck, lions and leopards.
    • And last but not least, there’s the rainforest walk along the Cliff Path of Victoria Falls itself.

Victoria Falls National Park is just a short walk from Ilala Lodge Hotel, and the Cliff Path takes you into the spray zone of the Falls. The closer you get, the wetter the forest becomes. Mist hangs in the air, vegetation thrives in the constant moisture and the sound of the Zambezi gets louder.

Witnessing the Falls is an adrenaline rush of another kind. Your pulse might not thunder from nerves, but from the awe-inspiring sight of Mother Nature’s might and beauty.

    The Different Seasons

When you visit Victoria Falls matters. The season affects everything from the volume of water over the Falls to the accessibility of the gorge, the best time for white-water rafting, and wildlife viewing.

From May to October, the drier months bring more accessible gorge conditions, excellent game viewing as wildlife gathers around the Zambezi, and prime conditions for many adventure activities. From November to April, the rising water levels transform the Falls themselves, creating a spectacular curtain of spray and powerful flow.

Visit around the full moon between March and June, and you may also see a moonbow: A rainbow created when moonlight passes through the Falls’ mist.

Different seasons offer different reasons to come – all worthwhile – so be sure to do your research and pick a time that best suits your preferences.

  • The 5 Best Birds to Tick Off Your List in Victoria Falls

The 5 Best Birds to Tick Off Your List in Victoria Falls

Few places in the world combine the raw power of nature with such refined tranquillity as Victoria Falls. On the one hand, you have all the thrill and beauty generated by the mighty waterfall, and on the other, the comfort of town, complete with all its restaurants and shops.

At Ilala Lodge Hotel, the boundary between wilderness and comfort feels as natural as breathing. The hotel’s manicured gardens ease into the fringe of Victoria Falls National Park, where the spray from the Falls – the legendary Mosi-oa-Tunya or “ Smoke That Thunders” – mists the air and nourishes a ribbon of lush rainforest that remains green all year long.

For birdwatchers, this setting is nothing short of paradise. From the comfort of your balcony overlooking the grounds or over breakfast on the terrace, you might glimpse iridescent flashes in the treetops or hear the call of an African Fish Eagle. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious first-timer, Victoria Falls offers a spectacular introduction to the birds of southern Africa.

Here are 5 of the most exciting species to look out for during your stay.

    1. African Paradise Flycatcher

It’s hard not to stop and stare when an African Paradise Flycatcher flits through the foliage. With its rust-red plumage, blue eye-ring and long, ribbon-like tail (on the males during breeding season), this small bird brings a touch of theatre to Ilala’s grounds. They move with agile, precise bursts, snatching insects mid-air and darting between branches.

You’re most likely to see them in the gardens or in the adjacent rainforest, where they prefer dappled light among the tree branches. They’re a reminder of how close the wild truly is, even within the serene grounds of the hotel.

    2. Trumpeter Hornbill

No other bird quite embodies the drama of Victoria Falls like the Trumpeter Hornbill. Its loud, laughing call reverberates through the rainforest canopy and over the lawns of Ilala Lodge Hotel, especially in the mornings. These striking black-and-white birds (Quite prehistoric-looking, wouldn’t you agree?), with their curved bills and prominent casque, often move around in small family groups, feeding on fruit trees near the edge of the park.

They are excellent indicators of the environment’s overall health as hornbills rely on old trees with natural cavities for nesting, many of which thrive in this area thanks to the moisture and protection of the Falls’ microclimate. Catching a glimpse of these impressive birds is like experiencing a herald of the rainforest itself!

    3. African Fish Eagle

The African Fish Eagle is perhaps the most unmistakable of all birds in Zimbabwe, and its haunting call is often described as the “voice of Africa.” With chestnut plumage, a snow-white head, and a commanding presence, this raptor reigns over the Zambezi River.

Guests of Ilala Lodge Hotel often hear their cries from the poolside or spot them perched on riverside trees while out on a sunset cruise. (Browse our sister property’s Ra-Ikane River Cruises here.) Watching one plunge from the sky to snatch a fish from the water’s surface is an unforgettable sight.

    4. Schalow’s Turaco

Of all the feathered residents near the Falls, few inspire such admiration as the Schalow’s Turaco. Endemic to a limited range in south-central Africa, it’s one of the most special sightings for birders visiting the region. Its emerald body, crimson flight feathers, and tall green crest make it a thrill to spot among the treetops.

You might hear it before you see it: A distinctive “kow-kow-kow” call echoing through the canopy of the rainforest just beyond Ilala’s garden fence.

    5. White-browed Robin-Chat

Even if you don’t consider yourself a birder, the White-browed Robin-Chat will likely win you over with its voice. Its melodic, almost conversational song greets guests each morning at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

Recognisable by its bright orange underparts and white eyebrow, this bird thrives in gardens and riverine thickets. Many guests see them hopping confidently across the pathways, tail flicking as they search for insects. They’re among the friendliest birds in Zimbabwe, often so close you can watch them over your breakfast coffee.

    Birdwatching in Victoria Falls

What makes birdwatching here so rewarding is the sheer diversity compressed into such a small area. The rainforest, fed by the Falls, attracts tropical species; the Zambezi River sustains waders and raptors; and Ilala Lodge Hotel’s own gardens provide a sanctuary for smaller songbirds and seasonal visitors.

Between September and March, migratory birds arrive in full force, transforming the skies with colour and song. Bee-eaters, cuckoos, and kingfishers add their brilliance to the mix, making spring and summer the most dynamic time to visit our feathered friends. Yet even in quieter months, the interplay of water, forest and open air ensures there is always something to see.

For guests who wish to explore further, day trips to nearby game reserves like Chobe National Park or Hwange National Park offer excellent opportunities to expand your list.

    Stay With Us

  • The Best Spring Activities in Victoria Falls

The Best Spring Activities in Victoria Falls

Spring in Victoria Falls is a time of vibrancy and renewal. From the moment you arrive, you’ll simply feel it in the air! Conditions-wise, the days grow warmer, the Zambezi River’s water level begins to drop, and our town’s surrounding landscapes are tinged with fresh green. (This excludes the rainforest on the edge of the Falls – which is always green!)

For travellers, the spring season offers a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and leisurely moments that define the spirit of this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. From heart-pounding activities to laid-back river cruises, spring is the perfect time to discover the very best things to do in Victoria Falls.

And at Ilala Lodge Hotel, you’re perfectly positioned to enjoy it all! With sprawling lawns overlooking the mist of the Falls, a pool deck for lazy afternoons, and a bar that invites lingering over a gin and tonic, our hotel makes an ideal base for your adventures. Even better, every excursion, from transfers to bookings, can be arranged directly through reception, leaving you free to simply relax and savour your time away.

Here are five unmissable spring activities to add to your Victoria Falls getaway itinerary.

    1. White-Water Rafting on the Zambezi

Do you have the nerve to tackle the mighty Zambezi? We bet you do.

Spring is when the Zambezi comes into its own for rafting. As the water levels recede, the river reveals some of the most exhilarating Grade IV and V rapids in the world. Expect towering waves, swirling whirlpools, and stretches of calm where you can take in the stark beauty of the Batoka Gorge.

Rafting is not just about adrenaline, it’s also a chance to witness the raw power of the Zambezi, and nothing reveals scale like being a part of the very thing you’re witnessing… Whether you opt for a full-day adventure or a shorter stretch, your day ends back at Ilala Lodge Hotel, where the pool and a chilled drink await. (To settle the nerves.) Few things feel better than swapping tales of the river while watching the sunset from the terrace.

    2. Devil’s Pool at Livingstone Island

Few activities are as iconic as swimming at the very edge of Victoria Falls. During spring, when the Zambezi’s water levels are low enough to make it safe, Devil’s Pool becomes one of the most extraordinary natural swimming pools on earth. Guests are guided to Livingstone Island before wading into the current and easing into the rock pool, just metres away from the world’s largest sheet of falling water.

We know, it sounds nuts, but the experience is both surreal and exhilarating, made even better by the photos you’ll take from the edge. Transfers and guided tours to Devil’s Pool can be arranged seamlessly from Ilala Lodge Hotel’s reception, meaning all you need to bring is your sense of adventure.

    3. Wildlife Viewing Near Victoria Falls

Spring also brings excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities to our region, particularly for those interested in birding. Victoria Falls National Park lies just minutes from Ilala Lodge Hotel, offering glimpses at the antelope, monkeys and warhogs that frequent the rainforest.

For a more quintessential safari experience that includes large mammals, read our sister property’s blog post titled Best Victoria Falls Wildlife Encounters.

After a few hours of exploring the bush, return to Ilala’s lawns where warthogs – and sometimes ellies – graze, offering a whimsical reminder that here, the wild is never far away.

    4. Sunset Cruises on the Zambezi

After all that heart-pounding excitement, it’s time to tone it down and explore a gentler side to spring here in Victoria Falls. There are few better ways to end a spring day than drifting along the Zambezi at sunset. As the sky shifts to amber and rose, hippos grunt from the shallows, crocodiles bask on the banks, and elephants may wander down to drink. With a drink in hand and snacks served onboard, this is the most serene way to take in the river.

We recommend making use of Palm River Hotel’s Ra-Ikane River Cruises. Our sister property is located a short drive up-river from the Falls and we have regular shuttle runs between the two hotels for in-house guests.

Returning to Ilala Lodge Hotel after your cruise, the evening continues with a meal at our award-winning Cassia Restaurant. Known for its elegant dishes and views of the spray from the Falls, it’s the perfect cherry on top of your beautiful spring day.

    5. Rainbows at the Falls

Spring brings a special kind of magic to Victoria Falls. Above and beyond all the incredible things you’ll see, here we’re talking about the chance to see rainbows in the mist. With water levels lower than in peak flood, visibility improves and the Falls often sparkle with rainbows, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

On full moon nights, visitors may even witness the phenomenon of a lunar rainbow, a natural wonder unique to only a handful of places on earth. It truly is spectacular.

From Ilala Lodge Hotel, the entrance to Victoria Falls National Park is just a short walk away, making it easy to visit the Falls multiple times during your stay. Whether you want to capture photographs, feel the spray on your skin, or simply pause in awe, this is one of the most timeless things to do in Victoria Falls. We’re based here, and yet, we never tire of it.

    Staying With Us

After days filled with exploration, Ilala Lodge Hotel offers a haven of comfort. Our pool deck invites lazy afternoons under the sun, the bar serves cocktails as the sky turns changes from afternoon to dusk, and the gardens provide a serene retreat where the rumble of “the smoke that thunders” is always close.

With seamless booking of activities, reliable transfers, and staff ready to share their local knowledge, your spring holiday becomes effortless. From adrenaline seekers to those who prefer slow afternoons and scenic moments, Ilala Lodge Hotel is the perfect base to experience the best things to do in Victoria Falls.

Browse our accommodation options here and get in touch with us via onlinereservations@ilalalodge.com to secure your dates.

We look forward to welcoming you to Victoria Falls!

  • The Story of the Zambezi River

The Story of the Zambezi River

    From source to smoke…

There is a waterway that winds through southern Africa: Ancient, constant, alive. It rises quietly in the wetlands of north-western Zambia, flowing through miombo woodland and grassy plains. Over more than 2500 kilometres, it gathers force, carving a path through six countries (Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique) before plunging, with thunder and mist, into the gorge at Victoria Falls.

This is the Zambezi River. From source to smoke, it carries more than water. It gives life, shapes cultures, and weaves stories passed from one generation to the next.

Below, we share some of the river’s story; one that will form an integral part of your stay at Ilala Lodge Hotel.

    The Very Beginning

When standing before the majesty of Victoria Falls, it’s striking to consider the Zambezi’s humble origin: A marshy spring near Kalene Hill, close to Zambia’s border with Angola.

This peaceful source is considered sacred by local communities, the beginning of something mighty. It’s almost impossible to imagine, from these still headwaters, the drama and grandeur to come!

As it journeys south and east, the river changes shape, name, and meaning. Among the Lozi people of western Zambia, it is called liambai, “the great river.”

    The Swelling River

By the time it reaches western Zambia, the Zambezi expands into the vast Barotse Floodplain, a seasonal inland sea that swells with the rains.

Here, the river plays a vital role in Lozi traditions, most notably during Kuomboka, a vibrant ceremony marking the Litunga’s (king’s) annual move from lowland Lealui to the higher ground of Limulunga. The royal barge journey, accompanied by music and fanfare, reflects both the rhythm of the river and how it shapes the lives of those who reside on its banks.

    The Grand Descent

Near the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the river narrows between basalt cliffs and plunges more than 100 metres into a deep chasm at Victoria Falls…

Victoria Falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders”, is not just a waterfall, but a full-sensory experience.

The roar can often be heard from Ilala Lodge Hotel, though never intrusively. A constant mist rises from the gorge, nourishing the lush rainforest opposite, which guests can explore via the scenic Cliff Path.

In many ways, the Falls marks a shift in the Zambezi’s journey. We think of the river now as, ‘upstream from the Falls’ and  ‘downstream from the Falls’.

    After the Falls

For many visitors to Ilala Lodge Hotel, Victoria Falls is their first encounter with the Zambezi, but the river’s story continues long after this great descent.

Beyond the Falls, the Zambezi snakes through a twisting gorge system more than 100 km long. These churning rapids draw thrill-seekers from around the world for white-water rafting and river adventures.

Further downstream lies Lake Kariba, one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs. Its construction in the 1950s displaced thousands and gave fuel to the existing legend of Nyami Nyami, the river god. Many believe the dam enraged him by dividing his watery kingdom and separating him from his wife.

Past Kariba, the river flows through Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe, famed for its wildlife. Finally, the Zambezi reaches Mozambique, fanning into a broad delta before merging quietly with the Indian Ocean at Chinde: A serene ending to an epic journey.

    Stay With Us

Ilala Lodge Hotel offers more than a luxurious stay, it’s your front-row seat to the Zambezi’s greatest crescendo.

Watch the spray rise from your balcony, listen for the distant thunder, and feel the river’s presence in the air. Just beyond your window, the Zambezi continues its timeless path to the ocean.

  • Restoring Ndlovu Secondary School

    Restoring Ndlovu Secondary School

At Ilala Lodge Hotel, giving back to our community is an integral part of what we stand for. As part of the Palm Hospitality Group’s (PHG) broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, our recent partnership with Ndlovu Secondary School stands as a proud example of how sustainable development can change lives.

    Let’s take a closer look…

    A Community In Need

Our partnership with Ndlovu Secondary School began in August 2024 with one clear goal: To help the school recover from major storm damage and become safe to reopen. The previous year, strong winds and heavy rains had torn off large sections of the roof, leaving the school in disrepair. During our visit, it quickly became clear that the most urgent needs were access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities.

To ensure the success of the initiative, we partnered with Corinthians, a local NGO focused on sports development and youth upliftment. We also engaged closely with the local leadership, including the Chief, headman, councillor, and school development committee, securing community support every step of the way.

Water: A Basic Right, A First Priority

Our first mission was clear: Restore access to clean water.

The school’s solar-powered borehole had long been out of commission, and both teachers and learners were relying on pit latrines due to non-functional water systems and a damaged soakaway. Even the children’s toilet block was roofless, exposing them further to unhygienic conditions.

In January 2025, our dedicated PHG maintenance team got to work. The worn-out 200-metre cable was replaced, the solar borehole system rehabilitated, and the solar panels were serviced – restoring water access not only to the school, but also to the teachers’ cottages and the wider community.

Recognising that sustainable water access also requires adequate storage, we installed four 2 500-litre water tanks and constructed a tank stand for a 5 000-litre reservoir.

With a total storage capacity of 15 000 litres, Ndlovu Secondary School is now better equipped to expand its agricultural projects and maintain good hygiene practices.

Beyond water and sanitation, our team also turned attention to the school’s administration block, which had suffered major damage during the same storm. With the help of a local construction company, some classrooms had already been re-roofed. We stepped in to repair leaking ceilings, repaint the offices, reception area, and computer room, and give the entire block a much-needed facelift.

What was once a tired-looking space plagued by water damage now looks fresh, clean, and welcoming!

    Celebrating Progress

In a heartwarming handover ceremony, eight members from PHG (made up of both Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel) and three representatives from Corinthians travelled to Ndlovu to officially mark the completion of the project’s first phase. Our Human Resources Manager, Phillip, led the team, and we were honoured by the presence of local leaders, including the councillor, headman, and representatives from the school development committee, National Parks, and Breeze FM.

The event was a celebration in every sense. In a generous and unexpected gesture, the councillor donated a cow to feed everyone in attendance. Watching the children enjoy a hearty meal of sadza, rice, meat, and cold drinks reminded us why we do this work: Real change creates real joy!

    World Environment Day Schools Debate

On the same day as the handover celebration, Ndlovu Secondary School also hosted the 2025 World Environment Day Schools Debate, proudly sponsored by Palm Hospitality Group. Eight schools participated (three rural and five urban) with the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The day began with a community clean-up, followed by the debate, which focused on wetland conservation and other Sustainable Development Goals. Urban schools showed strong performances, highlighting the need for better resources in rural areas like Ndlovu. It was a powerful day of awareness, learning, and community connection.

    Our Broader Mission

As we reflect on this journey, we’re reminded of the power of partnership, perseverance, and purpose. We remain deeply committed to providing meaningful differences within our local community of Victoria Falls. At Ilala Lodge Hotel, we believe that hospitality goes beyond comfort and service; it’s also about compassion. We are proud to be part of a hospitality group that sees community development not as a side project, but as a responsibility.

The project has been completed through the Palm Hospitality Group Foundation, which is supported by the dedication of our hospitality teams at Ilala and Palm River Hotel, alongside the generous donations made by guests visiting our establishments. We are grateful for their ongoing support and are proud to share with the world, the tangible differences we are actively involved in. • Sharing Easter Warmth & Comfort With Our Community

Sharing Easter Warmth & Comfort With Our Community

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – African Proverb

At Ilala Lodge Hotel, we believe in the power of community and the impact of small acts of kindness. Through our Ilala Cares initiative, we are proud to support and uplift the people who make up the Victoria Falls community; those who have lived their lives in our beautiful town and in turn, have made it such a special place to call home.

This past Easter, we embraced the spirit of giving with thoughtful donations, bringing comfort and dignity to those in our community who need it most.

    Comfort For Our Elders

The heart of any community lies in its elders, and this Easter we were honoured to bring a little extra comfort to the residents of the Old People’s Home. With a donation of 20 bedsheets, 20 towels and 50 pillowcases, our goal was to brighten their living spaces and remind them that they are seen, loved, and respected.

One of the highlights of this visit was the joy experienced at seeing Mumba, a familiar face who regularly visits the home for fellowship. His warm reception from the residents touched all of us deeply and reminded us of why these moments matter so much.

Chinotimba Clinic: Supporting Our Local Healthcare Heroes

Healthcare workers are the unsung heroes of every community, and Chinotimba Clinic in Victoria Falls is no exception. Despite limited resources, this municipal facility remains a vital lifeline for thousands. (Especially mothers and newborns in the clinic’s busy maternity ward, which houses more than 20 beds.)

This Easter, we delivered essential linen to the clinic to support the hardworking staff in their day-to-day care of patients. With no washing machine on site and ongoing structural challenges – like a damaged roof – every donation makes a difference. The gratitude and excitement from the team reminded us that helping healthcare heroes goes far beyond material support; it’s about standing in solidarity with those who care for others.

Spreading Warmth Through ‘Donate a Blanket’

As temperatures begin to dip heading into the cooler months, we teamed up with the Donate a Blanket Group to help provide comfort to the most vulnerable members of our community. This grassroots organisation focuses on assisting seniors and orphans in Ward 11 of Mfelandawonye, located in the Mkosana township.

Ilala Lodge Hotel proudly contributed 40 pillowcases, 20 bed sheets, and 20 towels towards this initiative.

    Our Why

Ilala Cares isn’t just a slogan – it’s a reflection of our values. As a proudly Zimbabwean, family-run hotel, we recognise the deep connections between hospitality, community, and humanity. By giving back, we ensure that our community continues to grow stronger, healthier, and more hopeful.

Whether it’s fresh linens, a kind word, or simply showing up, we remain committed to being part of the change we want to see. Thank you to our staff, guests, and local partners who make these efforts possible.

The Route: Where Scenery Meets Adventure

We think you’ll find this marathon route to be varied, lined with supporters and as spectacular as the Falls themselves!

Starting and finishing at Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls town (only 1,4 km from Ilala Lodge Hotel), runners will cross the legendary Victoria Falls Bridge – turning around before they reach Zambia – and double back to experience the view from the other direction as well.

The run then follows Zambezi Drive, winding through pristine wildlife areas where you might spot elephants, impalas and curious warthogs wondering what on Earth is going on in their backyard… Not to worry, rangers patrol these portions of the route to ensure the safety of all participants.

Additionally, there will, of course, be regular water stations along the way, while enthusiastic locals and race supporters line the streets to cheer you on. When the legs are weary, these cheers are endlessly uplifting.

While this is a race, we think it’s worth mentioning that it’s an experience, too. Enjoy the journey and spare some time on the clock for the many spectacular viewpoints.

    Number One in Our Hearts

The Palm Hospitality Group never misses a chance to showcase our talent, and we’ll once again be entering a team of enthusiastic and competitive runners. Whether you’re looking to smash a personal best or simply soak in the views, you’ll be in great company!

  • Unveiling Cassia Restaurant’s New Look

    Unveiling Cassia Restaurant’s New Look

We are over the moon to share that the refurbishment of our award-winning Cassia Restaurant is officially complete – on schedule, no less – and that we’ve been welcoming guests into this stunning new space since the beginning of the month.

The idea was to refresh our dining area while still retaining that authentic feel that guests have come to love over the years, and we believe we’ve succeeded in doing exactly that.

We’ve transformed both the inside and the outside of the restaurant into environments that blend elegance with functionality, providing an atmosphere of understated luxury we know you’ll love.

Keep scrolling for a closer look at the beautiful end result!

    A Refined Dining Experience

As guests enter the newly refurbished Cassia Restaurant, they are greeted by rich wooden accents and warm tones that create a welcoming atmosphere.

These elements are thoughtfully complemented by botanical wallpaper and a striking green herringbone tile backsplash, which adds a touch of modern elegance to our hotel’s timeless charm.

The colour of the chairs picks up on this natural palette and their plush appearance marries well with the space’s overall cosy feel.

In brief: The perfect place to start your day in Victoria Falls!

    Luxury, The African Way

One of the standout features of the newly designed main dining room is its iconic thatched ceiling, which remains a symbol of African architectural heritage.

We love the warmth created by this uniquely African roofing style, and have sought to enhance it by adding large, decorative chandeliers to draw the eye upwards. The result is both grand – due to the scope and height of the ceiling – and cosy.

Below foot, the stonework keeps guests grounded, while lending to the overall natural feel of the space.

    Redesigned Buffet Area

Our buffet area has been reimagined to offer functionality, flow and elevated presentation.

Custom wooden serving stations display a range of freshly prepared dishes – like cut fruit in the mornings – that highlight the vibrancy of our local cuisine. We hope this set-up offers a feast for your eyes, preparing your palate for a wonderful meal!

Off to the side, you’ll find a state-of-the-art coffee station, complete with sparkling service sets and rich copper accents on the wall.

    Behind The Scenes

To further enhance our guests’ experience – as well as that of our dedicated culinary team – we’ve upgraded our kitchen facilities as well.

With new tiling, state-of-the-art extraction systems and modern cooking equipment, our talented kitchen staff are now empowered to craft even more exceptional dining experiences for you.

These upgrades ensure the highest standards of food preparation, allowing for the seamless delivery of dishes that delight the senses and showcase the expertise of our chefs.

    Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

And finally, what about the terrace?

We know our guests have long-loved Cassia Restaurant’s outside area for its unforgettable view over the hotel’s lush, rolling lawns and the sight of smoke rising up from the falls only a few kilometres away.

For our al fresco diners, new chairs and décor have been added to the terrace, adding a touch of modern comfort, while maintaining the charm of the space. The interplay between the interior and exterior dining areas is now more seamless than ever, providing guests with elegance and comfort no matter where they choose to sit. Even seated indoors, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the lush gardens through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, which bathe the space in natural light and invite the outdoors in.

    Thank You & Welcome Back

We don’t need to tell you that renovations come with their own set of challenges, but we’ve been incredibly fortunate in the professionalism, quality and timeliness in which all parties came together to make this refurbishment a success.

Thank you to our guests for your patience! We are so happy to be able to unveil the end result of our efforts and hope you love this space as much as we do – now and for years to come.

All that’s left to say is: Join us!

Words and pictures simply cannot do this space justice and we’d love the opportunity to share it with you in person.

  • From Garden to Table at Ilala Lodge Hotel

From Garden to Table at Ilala Lodge Hotel

Nestled in the heart of Victoria Falls, Ilala Lodge Hotel is more than just a place to rest and enjoy after exploring one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. We are also a hotel that prides itself on sustainability and providing our guests with fresh, locally-sourced food when they come and dine with us.

While our property offers the luxury of close proximity to Victoria Falls, our sister property The Palm River Hotel (located a few kilometres upstream from the Falls on the banks of the Zambezi River) is where the magic of our group’s sustainable garden begins.

The vegetables and fresh produce grown at The Palm River Hotel are essential not only to their on-site restaurant, but to our own award-winning Cassia Restaurant as well.

Both hotels benefit from this green initiative, which brings the freshest produce directly to the tables of our Victoria Falls restaurants!

The Palm River Hotel’s Vegetable Plantation

The vegetable plantation at The Palm River Hotel is grown in fertile soil fed by the waters of the Zambezi River.

This nutrient-rich environment offers an ideal setting to grow a wide range of vegetables, herbs, and even spices!

Through innovative sustainable practices, we have created a robust garden that supports the kitchens of both The Palm River Hotel and Ilala Lodge Hotel. Compost is collected from both properties and used to nourish the soil, ensuring that all the produce is organically grown and free from synthetic fertilisers.

The result? A consistent supply of high-quality ingredients that make their way into our kitchens, where they help to inspire delightful dishes for our guests.

    From Garden to Plate

At The Palm River Hotel, our vegetable plantation spans both a large Potager Garden and a smaller Kitchen Potager, providing a wide variety of fresh produce.

This includes everything from leafy greens like Cos Lettuce and Wild Rocket to fragrant herbs like Rosemary, Mint, and Basil, all of which find their way onto the plates of diners at The Cassia Restaurant. We also grow vibrant flowers, microgreens, and exciting varieties like heirloom tomatoes and dragon fruit, each adding unique flavours and textures to our menus.

Whether it’s the crispness of freshly harvested lettuce, the zing of locally-grown lemongrass, or the fragrant rosemary used in our heartier dishes, our shared garden inspires our kitchen teams to keep dreaming up new flavour combinations to suit the season.

    Dedicated to Sustainable Hospitality

Our group’s dedication to locally-sourced ingredients is central to our brand of hospitality, where sustainability and investing in the wider community takes centre stage.

We also like to think that incorporating food grown on one of our premises makes a unique and personal touch for our guests! After all, what could be more personal than knowing the food you’re eating has been grown especially for you?
